Final Project Proposal

For the final project, a minimum of 15 seconds of animation, I plan to expand the story of the room I created so far. I hope to create a room that tells the aftermath of  burglary and vandalism. To do so, I will make the room bigger, add more furniture and add more textures. I will also add more details to the existing furniture too.

I plan to create at least five more pieces of furniture: several wall mounted shelves that will have a wood texture, a closet with a light bulb inside, a modern lamp, a ceiling lamp, and a wood textured night stand. To incorporate these items:
  • I will move the bed to the back left corner of the room and rotate it so that it's length runs along the detailed wall.
  • I will move the dresser to the back right corner with it's back against the detailed wall.
  • The nightstand will be to the left of the bed and a lamp (barely standing) atop of it.
  • A wall mounted shelf will sit on the wall above the headboard of the bed.
  • The closet will be directly opposite of the window's location. It will be a small closet.
  • The table will be moved to be directly under the window.
  • The window will have a curtain rod and curtains.

Aside from adding more furniture, I will add more items into the room to make it appear lived in. These items include:
  • Books atop the shelves and on the floor.
  • One stuffed animal on the bed.
  • Personal care items on the dresser and floor.
  • Clothes and clothes hangers on the floor around the closet.
  • A digital clock on the floor, upside down by the night stand.
  • Wall plugs, a surge protector, cables, and a light switch.

The plans to upgrade the existing furniture are:
  • The bed's textures will be fixed so it will look better.
  • The table and dresser are currently too shiny.
  • I will add handles to the dresser.
  • The window's glass is not very apparent. I will crack and break it to make it more obvious.

Lighting plans:
  • There will be two sources of light: the lamp posts outside (it is nighttime) and from the lamp on the floor.

Animation plans:
  •  Animation will begin with an establishing shot of the state of the room.
  • The camera will follow the path that a person would walk when they first discover their room. It will be in a first person perspective.
  • The curtains will have an n-mesh to simulate a breeze flowing into the room.
  • The lamp will fall and roll a bit when the scene begins.
  • The 'person' will ignore the lamp because it's the least of their problems now. Before the person can examine the room, there is a chair in their way. The chair in the middle of the room will be moved out of the way. They will then walk counter-clockwise around the room with the bed as the final destination.
  • As the 'person' walks around, shelves will be delicately opened and examined. As they examine further and further, they will slowly stop bothering to be delicate with their possessions and start moving things around more violently.
  • The animation will end after the person makes their way to their bed, picking up a stuffed animal with a missing arm.

Coming soon~
I still need to figure out the final steps in turning the images into a gif.

Room Animated

When I created the lighting for my room, I did it based on my screen's brightness (which was at it's absolute minimum). As a result, when viewed with other monitors (such as the schools monitors that are at maximum brightness) the room was much brighter than I anticipated. Also, there were not enough shadows. I have completely redone the lighting and all of the following images are intended to be viewed on a monitor with a high brightness setting.

Fun with textures~

Blue wood texture made with an image.

 Here I used Procedural textures.
It was a combination of Blinn and Fractals.

The image plane of the TV was textured with PhongE.
The rest of the TV utilized Bling.
They were both colored with pure black, but look different due to the level of shine.
Also, for some currently unknown reason, The base of the television refuses to render properly.

Assignment #1

The goal of this assignment was to create 3 simple pieces of furniture using polygon primitives and the move, rotate, and scale tool in order to manipulate the edges, faces and vertexes.

First Object: Simple Flat Screen Television

This was my first attempt at creating an item in Maya 2014. I didn't use anything but my memory of my TV to recreate it. The scale isn't perfect, but it's a very close copy sans several edges that need to be beveled.

Second Object: Outdoor Dining Table

Outdoor furniture used as the model for the table.
Here was my second attempt. A fairly simple table with pegs at their feet. Working off my memory didn't work so well for the TV, so I found a picture for reference.

Third Object: Shelving Unit

Ikea's 'HEMNES' shelving unit was used as the model.
Finally, my third attempt. This is a model of a shelving unit, 'HEMNES' from Ikea. I did my best to keep all the spacing equal and copy it as close as possible.
